The Science of Symbols by Godfrey Blount is an early 20th-century exploration of Christian symbolism, ritual, and spiritual expression, published in London by Arthur C. Fifield in 1905.
Blount examines the role of symbols, ceremony, ritual, and sacred imagery within Christianity, arguing for their deeper psychological and spiritual importance rather than viewing them as mere formalities or superstition. The book reflects the wider intellectual and religious debates of the Edwardian era, particularly around mysticism, symbolism, spiritual renewal, and the tension between institutional religion and personal spirituality.
The work combines theology, philosophy, and cultural criticism, making it appealing to collectors interested in:
• Christian mysticism and symbolism
• Esoteric and spiritual literature
• Edwardian religious thought
• Occult-adjacent theology and ritual studies
• Antique theological and philosophical books
The book also contains contemporary handwritten annotations in pencil and ink from an early owner, offering an interesting glimpse into historical reader engagement with the text and its religious arguments.
An attractive and uncommon 1905 first edition with strong shelf presence.
Original dark green cloth binding with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Binding remains solid and structurally sound.
Some light rubbing and wear to corners, spine ends, and edges consistent with age.
