The Century Bible: The Pastoral Epistles is an early 20th-century theological and biblical study volume focusing on the New Testament epistles of Timothy and Titus. Edited by R. F. Horton and published in 1901 by T. C. & E. C. Jack of Edinburgh, the book formed part of the wider Century Bible series overseen by Professor W. F. Adeney.
Designed for both clergy and educated general readers, the volume presents the biblical text alongside introductions, notes, commentary, historical context, and reference material. It includes both the Authorised Version and Revised Version text, together with scholarly annotations and a fold-out map illustrating the journeys of St Paul across the Roman Empire.
Bound in decorative purple cloth with gilt lettering and Art Nouveau-inspired ornamentation, the book is an attractive example of Edwardian religious publishing and would appeal to collectors of antique theology, biblical scholarship, ecclesiastical history, and early 20th-century decorative bindings.
Contents include:
• The Epistles to Timothy and Titus
• Scholarly introductions and commentary
• Historical and theological notes
• Index and reference material
• Fold-out map of St Paul’s journeys
A charming and highly displayable antique religious volume from the beginning of the twentieth century.
Original decorative purple cloth binding with gilt lettering and design to front board and spine. Noticeable rubbing and wear to corners, edges, and spine ends, with some fraying and surface loss visible, particularly at the head of the spine. Binding remains intact and structurally sound.
Interior pages appear clean and well-preserved overall, with clear text throughout. Map remains present and in good condition. Light age toning consistent with age. A solid and attractive antique copy with obvious shelf wear typical of a well-used Edwardian volume (please see photographs).
